Special thanks to Joe Sapienza II for bringing us the following story and media:
On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 a small wild fire was reported in Centralia, PA. The out-of-control fire was found burning within the borough along Laurel Street. It had grown to about a quarter acre in size.
Workers from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources were quickly on the scene to extinguish it. Given the large amounts of trash found in the area, it is suspected that the fire began with some burning debris.
Joe Sapienza II captured the aftermath of the fire while in Centralia to shoot scenes for an upcoming documentary film about the town. He has graciously provided the above video clip of the remnants of the fire, as well as an interview with Charles Watcher from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Sapienza, along with Bobby Hughes (from EPCAMR), Mike Hewitt, and Jessica Johnson, spent some of their day putting up signs warning against illegal dumping in Centralia. A few photographs of these can be found at the end of the article.
The trash fire underscores the importance of the upcoming Centralia Cleanup Day on May 16th and shows just how much Centralia needs our support! Learn more about joining the May 16th cleanup effort.
