Here’s an excellent video created by TikiTrex. In it, the host explores the main sights in and around Centralia, Pennsylvania, including where the coal fire has broken through to the surface.
One of the best parts is when she uses a digital thermometer to measure the ground temperature in some of the mine fire steam fissures. Even though the thermometer only goes down an inch or two, it is measuring close to 200 degrees Fahrenheit in a few places!
At the end of the video, she heads up to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Greek-Catholic church at dusk. It’s a beautiful, if eerie, sight only found in Centralia, PA.
I must admit I felt saddened by the time capsule. Little did they know that there was no future.
